USA Cricket On Verge of Suspension After Violating ICC Norms

July 18, 2025

The United States of America Cricket Association (USACA) is in big state of turmoil with its governance-related issues with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC), which could see the USACA get suspended by both organisations.

Cricket has been growing rapidly in the USA, with people taking a keen interest in the sport at the moment. In the near future, the USAC, responsible for governing cricket in America, might face suspension from the ICC.

ICC And USOPC to Suspend USA Cricket

The USAC’s current chairman, Venu Pisike, is persistent in his position as the chairman despite the directives from the ICC and the USOPC for a change of leadership in the board.

The ICC and the USOPC have written to the USA Cricket urging an in-depth restructuring, including asking for the resignation of the current board members and transition to a board that comprises independent directors.

The ICC has warned the USAC that failing to do so would result in a suspension. The USOPC has also urged the USA Cricket to meet with its directive to feature in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where cricket is making its return for the first time since 1900.

Despite the advice from the ICC and the USOPC, USAC chairman Venu Pisike has kept hold of his position and asked the board members to hold their position, according to a Times of India report. He even rejected the resignation from independent director Pintoo Shah, who had stepped down from his position to comply with the directives from the ICC and the USOPC.

The situation became more complex when player-director Nadia Gruny, who had expressed her intention to resign in order to comply with ICC and USOPC directives, was subsequently removed from her board position.

In addition to that, Venu Pisike, in a board meeting on July 13, decided to terminate the long-standing agreement with the American Cricket Enterprises (ACE). ACE is the organisation that runs the Major League Cricket (MLC), the premier T20 cricket league in the USA, sanctioned by the ICC. This was a shocking decision just two weeks after USA Cricket showed its support for the league.

However, the proposed termination failed as several board members left the meeting, reminding Pisike of the directives from the ICC and the USOPC.

This governance-related crisis in USA Cricket has been present since July 2024, when the ICC sent a notice for governance-related non-compliance issues. The ICC set up a normalization committee to give cricket in the country a fresh start. Come June 2025, they asked the board members and Chairman Venu Pisike to step down.

If the ICC imposes a ban on the USA Cricket board, then the United States cricket team won’t be allowed to take part in the T20 World Cup that is to be played in early 2026. The USOPC suspension would mean that the US cricket team won’t take part in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
