The wait for the IPL 2026 schedule continues, and this time, it’s not just red tape holding things back.
With Assembly Elections looming in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam, the BCCI finds itself navigating a political minefield before it can finalise match fixtures for three of the league’s most iconic venues.
Add unresolved home ground crises for RCB and Rajasthan Royals, a razor-thin T20 World Cup turnaround, and a revised start date, and IPL 2026’s pre-season chaos is unlike anything fans have seen in years.
BCCI Confirms IPL 2026 Start Date Pushed to March 28 Amid Schedule Uncertainty
IPL 2026 will now begin on March 28, two days later than the original March 26 start date that was communicated to all ten franchises on December 15, 2025, just a day before the mega auction in Abu Dhabi.

The tournament is still expected to conclude on May 31, with 84 matches including the knockouts and the final. While the revised start date is internally confirmed, the full schedule remains officially unannounced, leaving fans, broadcasters, and teams in a state of uncertainty.
Why Assembly Elections Are Stalling the IPL 2026 Schedule
West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam aren’t just cricket-mad states, they’re home to Eden Gardens (KKR), MA Chidambaram Stadium (CSK), and Guwahati’s Barsapara Stadium (Rajasthan Royals).
With Assembly Elections approaching in all three, the BCCI is holding back the full fixture list until the Election Commission announces polling dates. The reason is straightforward: election season redirects state police away from public events, leaving large IPL matches without adequate security cover, a risk the board simply isn’t willing to take.
IPL 2026 Schedule to Drop in Two Phases — BCCI’s Tried-and-Tested Election Playbook
This isn’t the first time the BCCI has faced an election-year scheduling crunch. In 2009, 2014, 2019, and 2024, the board released fixtures in phases rather than all at once, and it’s set to do the same for IPL 2026. The first phase will likely cover 20–25 matches, giving teams and broadcasters enough runway to plan. The rest of the league stage and playoffs will follow once polling dates for the three states are officially confirmed.

IPL 2026 Schedule Release Date
Despite the delays, IPL 2026 itself is not under threat. The tournament remains on course from March 28 to May 31, spanning 84 matches across all ten franchises. The IPL Governing Council is expected to make an official announcement within days of the Election Commission releasing polling dates for West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Assam, with the first phase of fixtures likely dropping shortly after.
